Tare Market has put out a call for help. This summer Minneapolis has been reconstructing the streets that provide access to their business (and several other businesses) and that means the flow of customers has been turned into a trickle. This is how construction works in our city (and most American cities). Every few years we decimate our business districts with road construction and then we charge them for it. Construction in Minneapolis is SLOW. A small project like this generally takes an entire summer (the road construction season) while other countries condense similar projects down to a few weeks. Other cities actually subsidize businesses during the slow down. Condensing the construction timeline keeps local businesses from going bankrupt. It preserves jobs. It protects communities. It costs more and so Minneapolis doesn’t do it. FYI, Tare Market is a packaging-free business. In a world where just 9% of plastics are recycled (and badly), owner/operator Amber decided to make a better way. Not only is Tare Market making it easy for our community to Reduce and Reuse, they’re also setting the example for the rest of us to follow. Coffee (Outside) 10am Sunday. I want you to see the craziness that Tare Market’s customers have had to deal with to get to Tare Market (and @bauhausbrewlabs and @dogwoodcoffee and and @padraigsbrewing ) and a whole host of other small local businesses that are all choking to death while Minneapolis has been turning one of our last walkable streets into another street only for cars (but that’s another story). Group ride to Open Streets, Nicollet edition. For one day only Nicollet will be closed to cars (Lake St to 46th) which will make it open to people and give us a taste of what a walkable city could be like. Open Streets is a rare opportunity to enjoy one of Mpls busiest streets without the threat of traffic. 16 blocks will be walkable (and bikeable) for one day. Note: other cities (like Mexico City) do this weekly and at a much larger scale. The bike bus group ride leaves Recovery Bike Shop at 11am Saturday, but you can join the ride wherever it’s convenient. Check out the route map. Station times are estimates.
