He put this Radpower ebike back together and uses it instead of a car. It’s a Class-2 ebike, which means it has a throttle. No pedaling required. Our NE Neighbors showed up this morning for Coffee (Outside) sponsored by @recoverybikeshop to support @pilllarforum \n\nAfter recent events that have caused closures (& reopens) to the music venue, NE has really come together and rallied behind the business, Corey & his team. \n\nPilllar Forum is a story of what you put out into this world you get back 10 fold. \n\nEarlier this year, this corner & business was highly trafficked by 🧊 \n\nThe coffee shop was the meeting point. \n\nThey built a network of volunteers in the community to support the local businesses at risk on Central Ave. \n\nThey served free coffee, they provided a warm place to take a break, have a snack and grab a whistle. \n\nAnd today they continue to make business decision with a community based filter. Pilllar Forum is open but they’ve had a rough couple weeks. The city closed their venue. It was quickly reopened, but not before some shows were cancelled. The pipes started leaking on Wednesday. Another closure and reopening. More disruption.\n\nTo say that this skateboard themed coffee shop and music venue is a pillar of Northeast would be punny…but true. This is where patrols staged in order to best protect our neighbors during Metro Surge. This is the place that passed out free coffee to observers. This is where we got warm. This is where we picked up our free whistles. This is where we collected ourselves and got support after ICE attacks.\n\nPilllar gives more than it takes and we could not be more lucky that they chose Central Ave as their home. Now they’re asking for help, and we’re glad they asked. They do SO MUCH to help Northeast. We’re very happy to show our gratitude.\n\nPilllar has a GoFundMe, but you can also just head on over and buy coffee and a cookie. You can attend one of their shows. The money matters…a lot. But so do the people. Showing up sets an example for others to follow. Bring your friends. Show them how it’s done.\n\nThat’s what we’re gonna do on Sunday at 10am. We’re gonna enjoy our coffee outside, make a little crowd, start a little buzz for people passing by. The YWCA Women’s Tri at Lake Nokomis was Elizabeth’s first triathlon and it got her hooked. It is a super supportive and inclusive event, open to people at all levels. Elizabeth got to participate with women of all ages, abilities, and confidence levels. (At one point she passed a woman on a Huffy Cranbrook!) There were mom’s and daughters (including a mom-to-be!), children and elderly, individuals, teams. The crowds are amazing too. Could not recommend a better event. (Look for the Recovery Bike Shop tent too!)\n\nBike Volunteers:\n- People who can move about the course on a bike (max 12 miles)\n- Course monitors direct racers and viewers who need assistance\n- Cheer on the racers!\n- Also need mechanics who can perform minor repairs\n- Free Tshirt and food!\n\nYou will have fun! CANCELLED. Today’s ride is cancelled due to the rapid air quality change. It’s horrific out there. This is a last minute cancellation, so I will be at Sociable in case anyone shows up, but I don’t want to encourage anyone to be out in this mess.\n\nHit the Witches Hat water tower last week, something we’d never done before (except for the previous week!). Had to get just a tiny bit creative with the route (thanks, Andrew) and the climb is a lot (for Mpls), but the view is amazing and the tower is worth it!\n\nOne mechanical on the way. Broken chain. But we probably had half a dozen chain tools between all of us. David got himself going again with just a slightly shorter chain. He had to dispense with the easiest gears. Not ideal on the climb. But we all made it.\n\nThanks as always to the corkers and marshals!\n\nSee you at 6pm at Sociable for this week’s ride. Mind the heat. Mind the air quality. Climate change is no joke. You can find these all over Northeast if you have the right kind of eyes.\n\nFind this one at the intersection of Washington St, Spring St, and 5th St at the corner of Webster Elementary Sunday morning at 10am.\n\nThis is the kind of place that most people never experience, and may never even see, because they pass it in a car. But the walkers know that it’s a little public oasis, a sheltered spot amidst the pavement.\n\nThe Secret Garden Triangle is reclaimed urban land, a leftover from an imperfect street grid.\n\nPRIDE RIDE SUNDAY\n\nWe are hosting a group ride to Pride Fest in Loring Park. Ride leaves Recovery Bike Shop at 10:20am. Or be at Coffee (Outside) by 10:30am and we’ll pick you up as we head downtown to the parade.\n\nCOMMUNITY RIDE \n\nAs usual, there will be a Community Ride on the neighborhood streets of Northeast Minneapolis following Coffee (Outside) at 11:00ish.\n\nNO YOGA\n\nWe are canceling yoga this weekend (and next). All of our volunteer instructors are out of town. Sounds like a conspiracy if you ask me. 😎 \n\nSOREL’S BIKE\n\nSorrel’s ride is a sweet All-City Space Horse which Sorrel has decked out with period correct vintage and new components. The build geometry (stem extension, handlebars, seat placement, etc.) was crafted to match a different bike, the one that made Sorrel fall in love with riding again.\n\nSorrel: “It does everything I want it to do and nothing I don’t.”\n\nBut the important thing here is that Sorrel has been at the helm of Recovery Bike Shop for two full years now, two years of trial and challenges. Through this we have hammered and fought (with the challenges) to build Recovery Bike Shop into the place it is today and much credit goes to Sorrel for the bikes that we sell, the people we serve, and the crew that we have.\n\nSorrel is passionate about bikes, but it is a passion for humanity that has put Sorrel here at Reco. And that thoughtfulness and caring shows up in every decision. We picked Trillium Park for Coffee (Outside) this week because it’s sort of an under-appreciated urban green space that suffers from being surrounded on three sides by constant traffic, but also because Trillium is kind of an outsized landmark in the completion of the Grand Rounds.\n\nNot only are bike paths along St Anthony Parkway meant to run through Trillium, current plans have the little park as the launch point for a bike/ped bridge for people crossing New Brighton Blvd, a truly awful experience at present.\n\nToday Trillium is an orphan park, but someday it will be a feature on the Grand Rounds.\n\nYOGA 9am at Recovery Bike Shop before Coffee (Outside). Free!\n\nCOMMUNITY RIDE at 11:00ish after Coffee (Outside) leaves from Trillium Park.\n\nPHOTO: In a lot of ways Bella is the face of Recovery Bike Shop. She is often the first person people meet as they come through our door. And there could not be a better person to walk our customers through the process of buying their first bike.\n\nShe is great at meeting people where they’re at. She knows everything you could want to know about our bikes but can also hang with the kid who is just giving up training wheels. Northeast is lucky to have someone who cares as much about people as Bella does.\n\nHer ride (today) is the All-City Nature Boy with Hennepin Bridge dropouts, a gift from her wife. This is her preferred ride for Mpls’ web of bandit trails. The bell is on the left just before the road curves to the right and goes under the Hennepin Bridge. It’s free!\n\n🎥 Astrid is our newest mechanic and comes to us from the bike shops of Denver. She is a skilled mechanic, but she’s also an organizer who is doing the hard work of combing through our old systems and processes to help this place work even better. If there are still bikes on the sales floor in September, it will be in no small part because of Astrid’s work to keep us efficient.\n\nAstrid built her Giant Speeder Lite from parts around the shop. We’re riding the streets of Northeast to be a visual presence of support in the neighborhood.\n\nThis is Jane Jacobs’ concept of Eyes on the Street: avenues bustling with neighbors feel safer and encourage others to be out and about. This creates a virtuous cycle (pun intended) making it comfortable for more people to join us. And so on and so on.\n\nWe are activating our streets.\n\nEveryone is welcome to ride. Rides will stay in Northeast’s neighborhoods, so we will be close to home. Riders are free to join for as much or as little as they wish.\n\nRides start at approximately 11am following Coffee (Outside). Coffee (Outside) will be at the Bell of Two Friends on Nicollet Island this week (Sunday 10am) and the Community Ride will start here at about 11:00. Watch for our Saturday morning posts for new NE locations every week.\n\nIncidentally, we ride faster than a dog walk, but this is a slow meandering ride. Coffee (Outside) this week is going back to Boom Island. I didn’t plan this well (or at all), but this is an opportunity we can’t miss. So…\n\nBoom Island is hosting Beyond Walls (until it fades away), an absolutely ginormous land-mural/fresco from @saype_artiste and a small team of globe travelers.\n\nJoin us for Coffee (Outside) Sunday at 10am to see what we can see (honestly, it’s not much). But it is a happening. And it is an important project that we are more than happy to promote. With the planet as a canvas, Saype is creating a metaphorical chain of clasped hands across the entire world. Minneapolis is only the 21st destination for one of these ephemeral frescoes (created with eco-friendly materials) and the first North American site.\n\nPHOTO 1: Saype’s piece stretches across the grass behind Patrick and his Nishiki Modulus. But what you’re really looking at is a Dura-Ace track hub, a component Patrick has been riding for 3 decades. This bike, and several others over the years, has been built around the hub. All of Patrick’s bikes are quirky (to match their rider), and this is no exception.\n\nPatrick has the longest commute of anyone at the shop and today he chose to ride in on a two-speed, one of the more rare builds in the world because a two-speed tends to have all of the derailleurs but very little of the functionality. But the Dura-Ace hub makes it worth it.\n\nPatrick has more mechanic experience than most bike shops and has been in shops all over town. He’s built more of this year’s bike fleet than anyone else. Sparcle Turns Whirlers into Art\n\nRecovery Bike Shop (Reco) owners Seth Stattmiller and Elizabeth Richardson ran a Burning Man theme camp for ten years before getting banned in 2019 (but that’s another story). This year, they mustered the motivation to restart their theme camp dreams in Northeast Minneapolis during Art-a-Whirl. Probably you’ve already enjoyed the new Plymouth Bridge bike/ped tunnel. We’ve been using it since last fall. But now it’s officially open!\n\nThe new tunnel helps keep riders and runners from crossing paths with cars coming off of the Plymouth bridge, which can really be moving. The tunnel also provides a more direct route through Boom Island for commuters along the river. This will make an even bigger difference after the Marshall St reconstruction in a few years.\n\nJoin us for Coffee (Outside) on Sunday at 10:00am. We’ve had so many new people lately that I’m starting to feel obligated to mention that we don’t have coffee. We do bring treats to share, but I personally have never been a coffee drinker, so…yeah. But do feel free to bring your own. Lots of people do.\n\nEveryone is welcome at 9am yoga at the bike shop. It’s free. And we’ll go for a community ride after Coffee (Outside) at 11ish.
