Tare Market has put out a call for help. This summer Minneapolis has been reconstructing the streets that provide access to their business (and several other businesses) and that means the flow of customers has been turned into a trickle.\n\nThis is how construction works in our city (and most American cities). Every few years we decimate our business districts with road construction and then we charge them for it. Construction in Minneapolis is SLOW. A small project like this generally takes an entire summer (the road construction season) while other countries condense similar projects down to a few weeks. Other cities actually subsidize businesses during the slow down.\n\nCondensing the construction timeline keeps local businesses from going bankrupt. It preserves jobs. It protects communities. It costs more and so Minneapolis doesn’t do it.\n\nFYI, Tare Market is a packaging-free business. In a world where just 9% of plastics are recycled (and badly), owner/operator Amber decided to make a better way. Not only is Tare Market making it easy for our community to Reduce and Reuse, they’re also setting the example for the rest of us to follow.\n\nCoffee (Outside) 10am Sunday. The Northrup King Building campus is the largest art complex in Minnesota and it is just about my favorite thing about Minneapolis. What you most need to know is that it is chock full of passionate people doing the thing that they are passionate about. I cannot more highly recommend that you go hang out with these people.\n\nBut that’s not the point of this post, because most of those people will be inside and we want you to hang out with us at Coffee (Outside)!\n\nAt just over a hundred years old, the 10-building facility has just completed another one of its massive metamorphosis. The main building was recently turned into a butterfly. (Just kidding)\n\nFormerly the Northrup King seed company, the site became host to hundreds of artist studios over the last couple decades under the guidance of Debbie Woodward. But two years ago Artspace Projects, the company that now manages the massive facility, broke ground on development of residential apartments on the campus. Those income adjusted artist lofts are now open and full of families living and working at the Northrup King. That development also included new bicycle access through the campus as well as other public areas that have never really been open before. Come and enjoy them with us!\n\nJoin us 10am Sunday in the “back” of the Northrup King building for Coffee (Outside). You can enter the campus at 18th (Great Northern Greenway) and Monroe and then head toward the water tower.\n\nYou can explore the campus any time. The doors are open during business hours and you’ll find open studios at those times. But Art-a-Whirl in May and Art Attack Nov 13-15 are the absolute best times to visit. The studios are open and brimming with activity. This is a must do.\n\nFeel free to join us for yoga at the bike shop at 9am. Easy class. We even have mats to loan out.\n\nAnd we launch a NE Community Ride from Coffee (Outside) each week at about 11am. Have you ever actually been inside the Nicollet Island Pavilion? Well it won’t happen on Sunday because it’s not called Coffee (Inside).\n\nFor some reason the parks are reevaluating the operations at the Nicollet Island Pavilion which is a Mpls Parks property being operated by a private company (which pays rent to the parks). The Pavilion is available for weddings and other events. Nobody is actually unhappy with the arrangement. But it’s always good to take time and reflect?\n\nIn any case, the Parks wants to know how residents and visitors would like to see the Pavilion used? So think about it.\n\nMaybe the Pavilion could be a public market. Maybe there could be a restaurant like Sea Salt at the Minnehaha Falls or Bread & Pickle at Lake Harriet (but not like Pimento at Bde Maka Ska). Maybe it should be a hotel. Maybe it’s just fine how it is.\n\nFYI, the Nicollet Island Pavilion exists because someone thought it would be a good place for a boiler factory in 1897.\n\nIf you have some thoughts, I think you should email them to…\ninfo@eastbankmpls.org\n\nEither way come to Coffee (Outside) on Sunday at 10am. Jason (pictured) got married at Bauhaus before he started working there. That’s how much this place is a part of his life.\n\nWe almost lost Bauhaus this summer. Rather, we lost Bauhaus and got a new Bauhaus back. There’s something to morn there, but plenty to celebrate. And we’re super grateful to have a business like Bauhaus in our neck of the woods. Look for their events calendar (Octoberfest, Trivia Night, etc.).\n\nIt really is a new thing with some cool changes. And it’s the same old (old) space. Bauhaus is one of the best reuses of Northeast’s old industrial spaces.\n\nSo help us welcome the new (and old) crew and the new effort to the neighborhood on Sunday at 10am. Thanks to an amendment by Council Members Elliott Payne and Michael Rainville, the Central Ave Art Walk got a much needed vote of confidence Thursday as the Central Ave reconstruction project goes back to MNDoT.\n\nPayne @elliottforward1 and Rainville @rainvilleward3 (and their amazing staff), who have both been very supportive of the Art Walk, made sure MNDoT would understand that the lines on the street matter a great deal to the people of Northeast Minneapolis. Their amendment calls for “MNDoT to acknowledge that this part of Central Avenue is not a highway but a dense urban arts district.” The amendment speaks to the Art Walk specifically and calls for the inclusion of input from the Arts District and the greater community. This is a big step. This is a win.\n\nThank you to everyone who has sent emails or made phone calls or showed up for Coffee (Outside) to advocate for the Central Ave Art Walk over the last two years. The work has a long way to go, but we have been working to get to this exact point for a long time. And we are being heard! It’s true. The confluence of our 1,000th rider of the year and our 200th Coffee (Outside) of all time has occurred at the same time. And this is the crew that made it happen.\n\nWe focus a lot on the community outside of the bike shop. But let me brag about the people inside the shop for a minute. This is the first time Recovery Bike Shop has sold 1,000 bikes on its own. This is the first time a Reco crew has built 1,000 bikes in 12 months.\n\nThey did it by working together. These people look out for each other. They pick up the slack when someone is sick. They come up front to help each other when it’s busy. They ask questions and give answers without judgement. They quality check each other’s bikes and make each other smarter along the way.\n\nThis crew is made of some of the best people I know.\n\nIn 21 years I’ve never been more proud of what we do. I’ve never enjoyed this job more. I’ve never liked being at the shop as much as I do now. This place, this old bike shop, these people, they set a good example. They make this a healthy place to be.\n\nThank you to everyone that supported us this year. Thank you to everyone that rides in Minneapolis.\n\nIn honor of this milestone, we will be celebrating Coffee (Outside) at Recovery Bike Shop Sunday at 10am.\n\nIf you get here by 9am, you can join our weekly yoga class (free). Our NE Neighbors showed up this morning for Coffee (Outside) sponsored by @recoverybikeshop to support @pilllarforum \n\nAfter recent events that have caused closures (& reopens) to the music venue, NE has really come together and rallied behind the business, Corey & his team. \n\nPilllar Forum is a story of what you put out into this world you get back 10 fold. \n\nEarlier this year, this corner & business was highly trafficked by 🧊 \n\nThe coffee shop was the meeting point. \n\nThey built a network of volunteers in the community to support the local businesses at risk on Central Ave. \n\nThey served free coffee, they provided a warm place to take a break, have a snack and grab a whistle. \n\nAnd today they continue to make business decision with a community based filter. Pilllar Forum is open but they’ve had a rough couple weeks. The city closed their venue. It was quickly reopened, but not before some shows were cancelled. The pipes started leaking on Wednesday. Another closure and reopening. More disruption.\n\nTo say that this skateboard themed coffee shop and music venue is a pillar of Northeast would be punny…but true. This is where patrols staged in order to best protect our neighbors during Metro Surge. This is the place that passed out free coffee to observers. This is where we got warm. This is where we picked up our free whistles. This is where we collected ourselves and got support after ICE attacks.\n\nPilllar gives more than it takes and we could not be more lucky that they chose Central Ave as their home. Now they’re asking for help, and we’re glad they asked. They do SO MUCH to help Northeast. We’re very happy to show our gratitude.\n\nPilllar has a GoFundMe, but you can also just head on over and buy coffee and a cookie. You can attend one of their shows. The money matters…a lot. But so do the people. Showing up sets an example for others to follow. Bring your friends. Show them how it’s done.\n\nThat’s what we’re gonna do on Sunday at 10am. We’re gonna enjoy our coffee outside, make a little crowd, start a little buzz for people passing by.
