She didn’t argue. She showed up, rode well, and made the color bar look exactly as small as it was. That’s the tradition. When cycling forgets who it belongs to, Black women arrive and fix it. Could a bicycle replace a horse? The Army wanted to know. Handed the question to a Black regiment. Sent them into the Rockies to find out. Twenty soldiers. Single-speed steel. No gears, no fears. Fort Missoula to St. Louis. 1897. 1,900 miles. Gumbo mud, mountain passes, a country betting against them. They finished. The Army shrugged. No parade. No promotion. No lasting credit.
