SheRides is an inclusive mountain bike clinic in northern Minnesota hosted every June designed for women-identifying and non-binary riders comfortable in a femme-centered space. SheRides was founded by the Superior Cycling Association to help women improve their singletrack skills in a fun, supportive environment. Individuals of all skill levels and ages 12 and up (participants younger than 16 must attend with a participating parent) are encouraged to participate.

Through my own experiences helping to rebuild and maintain trail with MOCA / MORC and CLMTB on mountain bike trails and with the SHTA on the Superior Hiking Trail, these learning experiences have given me a better understanding of why the trail is built the way it is (example : why the rock is situated a certain way, or how the terrain leads to a specific feature) which in turn has led me to trust the trail and experience more joy while riding.
If you’ve ever wanted to get connected and give back, this is a great opportunity!

Cuyuna Lakes Mountain Bike Crew are the volunteers that create new, repair, rebuild and maintain the Cuyuna mountain bike trail systems alongside the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (MN DNR) on state managed lands.
They want to make volunteering and trails both accessible and inclusive.

wear long pants / durable pants (no leggings)
socks (recommended to be able to pull up over bottom of pants rather than just ankle socks - - but totally just a recommendation)
work boots / hiking boots
long sleeve shirt / layers
bug net for head (brim hat / baseball hat to keep net away from face)
neck gaiter or buff
gloves
eye protection (plastic work glasses/glasses/sunglasses for examples)
bug spray /tick repellent
sunscreen
plenty of drinking water (water bottle) and snacks
a backpack helps to easily transport your belongings while keeping your hands free to carry items to/from the trail work site
bike to reach trail areas - - you can also get there on foot if you don’t bring your bike
*** Poison Ivy is a big issue out here. So please be mindful and aware! If anyone is super sensitive to poison ivy, we won't let them run power tools just to keep them safe. ***
FOOD :
Meals are not provided, so please be sure to bring your own (food = fuel!)
There is plenty of delicious restaurants, cafes and coffee shops in Crosby to check out

I (Monica) always wanted to learn how to build and maintain single track mountain biking building, it’s something I find interesting and also intimidating to get into and I know I’m not the only one who feels this way, so I want to help create a bridge to this experience and education for myself and others.
I feel one of the best ways to give back is to learn the amount of work that goes into building and how to maintain these trail systems - - the more we know about an outdoor space the more likely we are to speak up for it and protect it too.
I also think that by learning how the trails are built, it might further my understanding of the trail itself and improve my mountain biking skills by making it less intimidating by having more depth of understanding of the trail itself.

For the past five years, Unruly Women has had the opportunity to partner with the Superior Hiking Trail Association to bring together incredible groups of women, femme and non-binary volunteers to help reroute and rebuild sections of the Superior Hiking Trail. Long lasting friendships have been made through these incredible experiences and of course, amazing trail work has been accomplished too!
This will be the 5th Annual SHTA + Unruly Women Trail Maintenance Weekend. As of 2024 it is considered an established program with the SHTA!! Thank you so much for your interest and participation so that we can continue this awesome trail work experience.
All tools and training will be provided by SHTA.
You do not need any prior experience in trail work, you will be taught on site and are encouraged to work within your comfort level - you will never have to do anything you’re not comfortable doing.
Campsites and dinners are provided (thank you Superior Hiking Trail Association!!)
Expect a .5 mile hike from the trailhead to get to the project, which means roughly 1 miles roundtrip.
ABOUT VOLUNTEERING and THIS EVENT:
Volunteering is a great opportunity to learn more about the areas we recreate in, about the work that goes into maintaining trail systems we use, and to not only give back to the community but to become a part of the community.
This volunteer event is free, the campsites and dinners are provided by the SHTA, and all you need is transportation to the campground, your own camping gear, food and water, and whatever else you normally bring camping.
You have the option to camp in our group sites Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights, but ultimately it's up to you what works with your schedule, as long as you can make it for the 8:30am start time for each day you’ve signed up to volunteer (Friday, Saturday and/or Sunday) until 4:30pm each or either day!
Although this will be hard work, we want you to work at your own pace and take any breaks you need.
This is a beginner-friendly event. No experience is necessary. Come learn about trail maintenance in a welcoming and safe environment.
This is an event for adult women, female identifying, femme and non-binary people.
This year, youth ages 12-17 are welcome if they are accompanied by a parent or guardian.

In 2024 and 2025, Unruly Women was a race ambassador and a supported organization by the Hungry Bear 100. Although we’re not local to Hayward, Wisconsin, our missions align and we came together to help raise funds, and create an inclusive and accessible community! Everyone in our group had such a great time, that I’ve decided Unruly Women will be at Hungry Bear 2026!

“The Hungry Bear was born in the days when gravel races were unsupported DIY events where you were lucky to get a paper cue sheet and find a tavern at the end. We are trying to hold onto that BYOB adventure vibe that comes with a little bit of trepidation.
