Tragic incident in the Loring Park area
Around 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 2, Minneapolis Police Department officers responded to reports of shots fired at an apartment building near 15 E. Grant St.
Seven people, including three police officers, were transported to Hennepin Healthcare. One police officer remains hospitalized.
Two people, including one at the scene and one transported to the hospital, died. The suspected shooter is also dead.
The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) is leading this investigation. Watch the BCA’s news conference for the latest information on the investigation.

Welcoming Week returns Sept. 10-19
Welcoming Week is an annual opportunity to come together, build strong connections and affirm the importance of welcoming and fostering a sense of belonging for all.
Welcoming Week 2026 will take place from Sept. 10-19. This year’s theme is “Stories We Share: The Courage to Connect.”
Community Safety Ambassador Program seeks applicants
The Community Safety Ambassador Program is looking for people to support its growing team. The program is recruiting for 20 positions:
- 15 Community Safety Ambassadors
- 3 Community Safety Ambassador Leads
- 2 Community Safety Ambassador Supervisors
The application period for these positions will close on Friday, Sept. 11.

Celebrating Latinx culture, history and community resistance
The Minneapolis City Council, the City of Minneapolis Neighborhood and Community Relations Department and the SOMOS Employee Resource Group cordially invite you to the 2026 Latinx Heritage Month Celebration. Join us on at 8 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 17 in the Minneapolis City Hall Rotunda for a celebration of Latinx culture, history and community resistance.
Latinx Heritage Month Celebration

The event will feature cultural performances by Away Runakuna, Colombia Live MN, Kalpulli KetzalCoatlicue and Angelica Bello. The performances will be followed by a breakfast and the reading of an honorary resolution recognizing and celebrating the rich contributions of our Latinx communities.
Hennepin County begins upgrading outdoor warning sirens
On Monday, Aug. 31, Hennepin County began upgrading the control system that operates outdoor warning sirens across Minneapolis. The upgraded system will reduce alarms that reach areas not directly at risk and will give technicians better real-time data about system performance. These improvements help ensure the sirens are ready when residents need them most.
During the month of September, you may hear short, 10- to 15-second “growl tests” from these outdoor warning sirens. These tests help confirm that individual sirens are working. You may also notice small differences in how the monthly sirens sound or the timing of the alerts. These changes are normal parts of the testing process.
