Hi all, this is a part vent and a part cry for help as I don't know how to address this situation.
\n\nSince January, a few buildings in downtown have been rolling out anti-homeless alarms and have been using them non-stop starting in the early evening (today before 6:50pm) and ending sometime around 6am.
\n\nPersonally, I've been hearing the echos of these alarms in my apartment sometimes the moment I get home, when I try to fall asleep, the second I wake up, and then once again as I wait for the E line to go to work. They have become extremely distressing and disruptive to my ability to live downtown.
\n\nI understand that homelessness is not a problem landlords are equipped to solve. Nonetheless, I question whether this is the correct way forward, especially as these indiscriminate actions inevitably catch residents in the crossfire. How do these actions promote a more \"liveable\" downtown?
\n\nI want to reach out to the city, but I don't know if they'll listen to a downtown resident vs a corporate landlord. Any suggestions or friends willing to help?

\n\n\nI biked to piano lesson after work and then to Cedar Lake to paddle all three lakes. The birds were chirping, it was warm, the wind wasn’t about to blow me away - life is worth living. People who hate on Minneapolis are truly missing out on the (affordable) daily wonders of this excellent city.

\n\nIMO, the Byzantine Memorial Chapel is one of the most profoundly beautiful places in Minneapolis. You really must see it in person to get the full effect. Today is your chance (though, to be fair, you'll get other chances if you miss today, like Memorial Day.) The opportunity is not as rare as some of the other Doors Open locations, but if you need something else to do with Mom after your brunch or whatever, I highly recommend it.

\n\nThe Memorial Chapel is the centerpiece of the cemetery and a priceless architectural treasure—one of the most perfect examples of Byzantine mosaic art in the United States. When it was completed in 1910, it was the only building in America with an authentic mosaic interior. Through the years, visitors have been astonished to find such an outstanding architectural jewel in the heart of the Midwest. Many experts now believe that a work of such magnitude could not be recreated at any price today, as artisans possessing the necessary skills have passed into history.
\n\nDesigned by prominent Minneapolis architect Harry Wild Jones and modeled after the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul, Turkey, it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
\n\nMosaic Interior
\n\nThe chapel interior was created by New York designer Charles Lamb and many consider it the most perfect example of Byzantine mosaic art in the United States. In 1909, Lamb traveled to Rome to enlist the services of six highly accomplished mosaic artists who had just recently completed a project in the Vatican. The artists created more than 10 million mosaic pieces, called tesserae, from marble, colored stone, and glass fused with gold and silver. The artists then traveled to Minneapolis to assemble the work inside the chapel.
\n\nThe chapel dome is 40 feet high and ringed with stained-glass windows that serve as a sundial telling the time of day and season. Four large mosaic figures representing Love, Hope, Faith and Memory are situated on the side walls below the dome. The figures were based on paintings by Lamb’s wife, Ella Condie Lamb, a noted portrait artist of her time.
\n\nRenovation
\n\nIn 1996, Lakewood embarked on a year-long project of renovating the chapel. Under the guidance of architect Jim W. Miller, AIA, new lighting and heating systems were installed, a new crematory was built in the lower level, and the front entrance was landscaped.
\n\nPart of Miller’s task was undoing alterations made over the century, such as attempts to darken the interior with yellow paper over the stained-glass windows and a brown carpet over the marble floor. To remain true to the original architect’s and designer’s intentions, Miller studied letters exchanged among Jones, Lamb and the Lakewood Cemetery Building Committee.
\n\nThe 1996 renovation maintained the high standards set when the chapel was built nearly a century earlier. The best materials were used and highly skilled artists were chosen to do the work. Because of this consistent attention to excellence, the Lakewood Memorial Chapel will continue to be a beautiful sanctuary for the community through the 21st century and beyond.

\n\n\nSo today I met my grandpa over in St. Paul and took the 61 Bus over to Southeast and Northeast Minneapolis for Doors Open. We first went to the Como Community Center, but then eventually took the 61 bus again over to Kramarczuk’s Sausage. My Grandpa got the Polish Kielbasa and I got the Grinder Sandwich. Both were great, with me trying a small bite of the Kielbasa that my grandpa got. My grandpa also got one their beers. When we left, we realized we were lucky enough to there when we did, as when we left there was a long line of people. We also took the 11 bus over to the Mississippi watershed, and then took the 32 and 83 buses back after we went to Antiquified Antiques to get my mom something for Mother’s Day. Anyways the food at Kramarczuk’s was great as always and I definitely see my some coming back here in the near future

\n\n\nAfter my update post of yesterday, many of you asked to see pictures from the Mayday parade. These are for you and for everyone else who took the time to send me your condolences and suggestions for healing. Thank you. You and your community helped me when I needed it most. I am eternally grateful.
\n\nOne note about the parade. I loved it. I loved that it was a celebration of life in a community devastated by inhumanity. The persistence of life in death - the rise of order from entropy. Mayday is the celebration of life. What began on the solstice with the promise of renewal is manifest on the equinox and in full bloom on Mayday.
\n\nMayday is also the time for the people, long dormant during the capitalist winter, to shatter permafrost’s isolation and reclaim the commons. Like plants after a forest fire, we rise not as individuals, but as an interconnected community. A forest is not made of one tree but of a diverse interconnected ecosystem. Each plant unique but totally dependent on each other for survival. Mono culture equals death. Diversity equals life, no system of extraction can clear cut the heart of the community.
\n\nOne final note. I really wanted to give a shout out to ArtStart and Lake Harriet Community School. As a parent myself, I know how hard it was for you all to pull that off. I could tell the parents were exhausted and the poor kids looked spent. The amount of time that that y’all must have spent to put that together, I can’t imagine. But I wanted to let you know that someone saw and appreciated your effort. Thank you.

\n\n\nFound someones dog running through traffic on E 26th and Hiawatha. Brown with a white chest star pity mix intact male with a brown Carhartt collar with a white shoe string and no tags. I took him to a vet clinic and they couldn't find a chip on him. Does this look like your dog???
\n\nI'd rather be able to give them back to the owner instead of having animal control pick him up, he seems in fairly decent health and relatively clean and was familiar with getting into a car and a house so he's definitely someone's dog.
\n\nUpdate: animal control picked him up at around 5:15pm 5/5/26, and they have my contact info, when they came to pick him up they had a scanner on hand and they scanned him again to double-check but still found no chip. 🫤 But while I was hanging out with him in my backyard he drank some water and I gave him some dog food, he really warmed up and knows some basic commands; he is clearly a loved pup and I hope his owners are looking for him!

\n\nA large number of you mentioned the Eloise Butler wildflower garden as a place where I might find peace and serenity. And I did, to a certain extent. I think I was too busy taking pictures of the flowers to actually stop and smell them. I must’ve taken hundreds, but seriously it really did bring me a lot of calm and peace.
\n\nI also visited the Walker, Minnehaha Falls, the Seward Cafe (great punk show), The 311 Club - Vacant rocks also Hi Alessandro & Dimitri - the only 2 Person I met all weekend. Also checked out the Fine Line on Saturday evening with it all culminating at the May Day Parade on Sunday.
\n\nIt’s been rough on y’all the last couple years with extreme sadness and grief at the loss of your loved ones and your communities. To keep your humanity through such horrors demonstrates, to me, your wonderful and kind nature. Thank you for your empathy, thank you for your support, and thank you for your humanity.
\n\nI wanted to share with you some pictures of your beautiful city and of natures healing gifts. May you find equanimity in them as I did.
\n\nA note on the photographs. Thank you to all those who suggested West Photo. They are a great bunch of people who are very knowledgeable and helpful. I didn’t end up renting a camera, however due to I wasn’t sure upon my length of time. So, these were taken with my iPhone under the worst possible lighting conditions and also edited with my iPhone so please take that into account.

I then got outdoor security cameras incase it happened again. Tonight around 11:00pm he returned and I caught him on camera looking in my bathroom window! This occurred in the SE Como neighborhood of Minneapolis (different from Como St.Paul). Do any of you recognize this man? Profile seems to match what my neighbors described so I suspect it is the same person.

A friend’s car was stolen near folwell community school last night (awful).
\n\nLong story short, a crate of my things were in the car, some of them quite sentimental. If you see a handwoven rug (potentially in a Walmart bag, pic attached below - my mom wove it😭), or an abandoned black milk crate with assorted items around the area (including jars of honey), please lmk!

\n\nUPDATE: some of the items from the car have been retrieved thanks to a tip (dumped in an alley).

I found this absolute UNIT of a cat near LaSalle and Oak Grove St on Sunday. He's pretty darn fat, his coat is nice, and he's VERY friendly with people. This is someone's pet for sure. I'm fostering him at the moment, but I'd love some help finding his owner... assuming the owner wants him back, of course. The more I think about it, the more likely it seems that someone dumped him in Loring Park. Regardless, he'll be getting a good home if the owner doesn't come forward.

\n\nAliya Rahman, a Minneapolis resident who was violently detained by ICE officers in January during “Operation Metro Surge,” filed a federal tort claim against the Department of Homeland Security on Thursday, claiming the agency used excessive force and violated her rights. Rahman was never charged with any crime. “They battered Aliya. They assaulted Aliya. They were negligent in their medical care for Aliya,” says Jessica Gingold, one of Rahman’s attorneys. “All of those things are illegal, and this is our tool for making sure that they have to pay for that.”
\n\nAliya Rahman was on her way to a doctor’s appointment when her route was blocked by ICE vehicles. Rahman’s window was smashed, and she was violently pulled out of her car. She told the officers she is disabled and autistic, but says they mocked her. Rahman was brought to an ICE jail, where she was denied medical care.
