\n\nIt's getting hot, and I need to spend my free time by the water. I've been able to bike to a few lakes in the metro area and with the exception of Bush lake in Bloomington, I would bike again to all the other places. Special shoutout to Shady Oak for being very bike-accessible despite being in the suburbs. Although Bush Lake was great, biking to Bloomington from Uptown left a lot to be desired and I probably won't be heading back there any time soon.
\n\nRemaining places on my list that I plan on biking to via majority trails:
\n\nWhat other lakes that are bike-accessible that I might be missing out on? Open to suggestions for bike-friendly overnight camping locations too! Thanks y'all!
\n\nEdit: Added Lake Harriet to the to-bike list. Also forgot to share this earlier but I drove to Antlers Park in Lakeville and had the worst time on the water. Lakes with Jetski activities are automatically on my shit list now that I know.

\n\n\nI’m not great at taking pictures, but they’ve done a beautiful job, lots of cool seating/viewing areas along the river. Just needs some time to build in some shade from trees, I noticed only one sheltered area. I hope they have some plans to improve the death trap along N 2nd St that still exists from 26th to 33rd Ave. Overall, a significant improvement and why I love this city! I used to avoid this biking this area, now I am excited to bike this new trail along with the extension to 26th from Ole Olson Park.

Before I get into my story, I think it's worth noting that over the past decade that I've lived in the Twin Cities, I have spent thousands on bike parts, and almost none of it in local shops because of my first year or so here. Thousands. I'm not trying to brag on the resources, just stating that local shops did not receive any of that revenue.
\n\nI lived in a lot of places with almost no cycling scene, and often a barely functional bike shop. Nonetheless, I supported those shops because they were often the only act in town, and the owners and employees were typically really great. However, when I decided to move to the Twin Cities I was excited by the prospect of moving to a bike-shop nirvana. I had visited and seen all the cyclists, I had read about the robust cycling culture, and numerous local shops had even made the glossy copy of national cycling publications. It was going to be great.
\n\nShortly before I moved, I had ordered an Alfine hub for a bike build. I completed it when I got here, and found it had a known problem; the roller clutch slipped in 5th. The place I ordered from said I could pull my wheel apart and ship them the hub, but the easiest option would be to go to any Shimano warranty shop for a core replacement.
\n\nOne very popular local shop was listed by Shimano NA as a warranty center, but I discovered that unless you are one of the regular \"barflies\" or hangers-on, you aren't getting the time of day there. When I finally got someone to deign to address me, and I explained the problem, the employee said \"I guess that's why you shouldn't have bought an Alfine, huh?\". Wouldn't even help with the warranty. I never went back.
\n\nI went to another popular chain, also referred by Shimano NA as a warranty center. They told me it wasn't a problem, they would pull the core and get a warranty replacement. Two days later I get a call that the bike is ready. That seemed really fast, but I went in, and they hand me a $150 bill for service. I explained that I didn't want them to service the hub, I wanted a warranty claim. They in turn said that if I wanted my bike back, I'd pay the $150, and that it worked just fine now. I paid the money to end the hostage situation, rode two blocks, and the problem was as bad as ever. And, they did the cable housing wrong. I never went back.
\n\nI ended up dismantling my wheel and sending the hub back to the online retailer, who promptly replaced it.
\n\nAnother time, I needed some Shimano road brake cables for a seasonal re-cable I was doing. I called a different popular local chain, who told me on the phone that they had them, and I could come on by. When I got there, the employee handed me MTB brake cables. I explained that those were not what I needed, but he said it's all they had, and they just put them in all the brakes. So, a wasted trip, a lie on the phone about my inquiry, and I certainly would never buy a bike from, or get service from, a shop that throws MTB-end cables in road shifters.
\n\nThe only shop that seemed halfway competent doesn't pass the \"Mellow Johnny's\" line for me. If you've never been, Mellow Johnny's is a shop in Austin owned by Lance Armstrong. It's not cheap, but also not super expensive either, especially considering the location in downtown Austin and the fame. They could certainly get away with charging more, but they don't. The shop in question here apparently thinks that they can charge a premium based on their lack of fame, and their honestly just-ok location. In fact, almost no shops locally can pass the Mellow Johnny's test. They all charge hefty premiums, and I don't know why. Austin isn't exactly cheap, and Mellow Johnny's is a REALLY nice shop.
\n\nI'll stop there. I have more stories...I visited nearly every shop in the area, and I can't believe just how bad they all have been. Since I gave up on them, I've built four bikes from frames and parts, all purchased online, and purchased two kids bikes from REI, heavily aided by their website ordering.
\n\nMaybe the LBSs don't miss my business, because there are simply a lot of cyclists here, and those cyclists are willing to spend their money to support bad shops just because they're \"local\". Some of that Minnesota culture of \"boosterism\" might play into this as well. But the only reason that a place with so many cyclists can have so many shops that are so very bad is because either the local cyclists don't know better, or they simply don't hold any of the businesses accountable by taking their business elsewhere. Online, if need be. I preferred to support LBSs everywhere else I lived even at a slight price premium, because of the great customer service and the connections. Here, the ask is that a pay an exorbitant price premium to be treated like they are doing me a tremendous favor, if they can even competently help at all.
\n\nIf you want better shops, businesses only learn when revenue suffers.

\n\n\nI’ve just started cycling this summer and am looking for more trails/routes from golden valley in the 15-20 mile range. I’ve done the above, medicine lake, and cedar lake trail. Looking to keep it fresh.
\n\nI also prefer a loop of some sort over an out and back.
\n\nI plan on driving to a few trail heads but leaving from home is just much easier on week nights.

Under a 2 hour drive from the cities and beautiful trails winding through the woods. I’ve been coming for a couple years and the expanded trail system is really great.

\n\nThis is our chance to get a protected bike lane that actually works. Not paint. A real barrier.
\n\nYou don’t have to live in Edina to show up or send an email. Minneapolis, St. Louis Park, anyone who uses this corridor - your voice counts. There are council members that are on board with it, they just need some extra support. You can email them on the city website

\n\nI know some of the construction in the Wedge is good pedestrian stuff (bump outs and what not), but 28th past Lyndale has been pretty treacherous for us recently, and I was driving on 26th the other day watching guys dodge and weave around cones, potholes, covered holes, and all sorts of other crap.

\n\n\nI completely get the hype about East Bush Lake. The water clarity is insane, albeit, you'll be seeing and feeling the seaweed versus just feeling them at Cedar Lake. On my ride home, there was a biker riding in the opposite direction also hauling his paddle board. Bonus: saw a scooter rider scootering home a TREE. Y'all are some real micro-mobility homies!

\n\n\nI'm balancing my grumblings about poor infrastructure (looking at you Bryant Ave north of Lake St) with sharing my appreciation to the folks responsible for some of my favorite bike facilities (Hennepin Ave, Bryant Ave, Plymouth Ave).
\n\nI visited Florida recently to see my family and checked out some of the bike infrastructure in Central Florida. It is Florida, so most of it was recreational trails. However, there was a particular trail that does go directly to a fairly dense area with housing, recreational facilities, and plenty of restaurants. I emailed the mayor and county reps afterwards to compliment them on the intentional planning with my usual advocacy (eliminating parking minimums would do wonders for that area). I got a hopeful response from the mayor and it turns out she sets a goal for herself to bike at least four days a week for transportation and she's supportive of eliminating parking minimums but going up against a city council that isn't.
\n\nAnyways, I wanted to share this just in case there's others out there who likes to yap and send emails like me. HAPPY NATIONAL BIKE TO WORK DAY Y'ALL!

I am interested in finding a bike that can comfortably ride the gravel and be comfortable enough to get there - I'm a few miles away.
\n\nI am looking at the Preamble and the Lowside. I really love single speed bikes and the Lowside meets this. The mountain bike tires could handle gravel but curious if people have experience riding the Lowside 20 miles or if this isn't that kind of bike. The Preamble checks the gravel box too although it looks like a fairly light gravel bike and it is a bit of a hybrid and I fear that I already have bikes that do a lot of what the Preample does.

I'm hoping to hear from some of you about which are the best trails to ride for a group of 7 or 8 beer swilling, casual (non-kitted) riders. I'm always interested to hear of the best bars/restaurants/brewpubs that cater to the bicycle riding crowd. By which I mean places where you can lock your bike up within sight, that kind of thing. Also, areas to avoid for whatever reason: trail conditions suck, not much to do there, etc. We are not youngsters; I think our youngest participant on this trip is 57. (That's wild, I just realized that) but we are a fun group, not afraid of adventures and long rides. What do you say?

I’ve always avoided biking bc I bought a new bike (a Salsa) and am worried about someone stealing it. I currently have a chain lock but want to add another lock into my system. I would really only be using my bike to go get groceries or go out to eat. It wouldn’t be outside by itself for longer than 2-3 hours at a time. Any U lock brand recommendations under $50 ?
\n\nAdditionally, is there anything I should be doing to the bike itself to keep parts from getting stolen? I don’t know much about bikes… So I apologize for the possibly dumb questions. Would love insight from the folks who have experience, thank you!

\n\nMy family (me, my wife, and 19 month old daughter) are car-lite in Denver (one car, I bike to work/daycare/errands) and visiting Minneapolis in a few weeks.
\n\nWe'd love to keep the lifestyle going on vacation, but I'm having trouble finding reasonably priced e-bike rentals that include a toddler seat. The couple shops I have found are closed Sunday-Monday, which makes our Monday morning flight a bit hard to catch.
\n\nWe'll be in town from Thursday 6/4 to Monday 6/8, staying in Standish, would be looking either for a full day Sunday rental (say Saturday evening to Sunday evening) or a full mid-day Thursday-Sunday evening rental, depending on cost.
\n\nDoes anyone have any leads, or would be willing to loan out their own bikes for the weekend for a couple hundred bucks (and whatever reassurance/collateral you'd need, of course)?

\n\nThe past many weeks I’ve been using the greenway again after a long hiatus due to job changes, and it seems like the greenway is STILL detoured to 28th between 5th and Bryant - but the only news I can find about the detour is from October 2025. Sometimes it looks like it MIGHT actually be open, but I’m loathe to have to turn back around if I’m wrong. Does anyone know the actual status of the Greenway at this point or have resources that maybe I’m overlooking?
