“What do our lives mean to y’all?”\nA Conversation With Joseph, One of Our Neighbors Living Outside & Navigating Systemic Housing Barriers/Brutality from Law Enforcement in the East Phillips Neighborhood\n\nWhat happened?\nJoseph and other residents who had been staying in the median of Cedar Avenue under the Hiawatha bridge were suddenly evicted by several MPD officers on June 18, 2026. Joseph can’t walk, so after pushing his wheelchair through oncoming traffic to get away from the cops, we stopped to chat for a while about housing, solutions, and the importance of stability for people living outside in the neighborhood. Some of that conversation is included here. Joseph consented to being recorded for an interview and wanted his name shared alongside his perspective.\n\n“[Having somewhere to stay] would make it a lot more stable, well for me. I don’t know about anyone else. It would give me a better opportunity to obtain things that I need.”\n\nDo you feel like it was better when there was a place for people to have their tents at least?\n\n“Yeah! Because you had, um, you had a place that you could call your home, now you have nothing. Just an empty space.”\n\nI’ve heard about people who, like, would go work a job and come back and all their stuff would be thrown away. \n\n“Yeah! Yeah, It’ll be gone, right. Just like one lady, she went to wash clothes, and she come back and all her stuff was gone. And they [contractors/cops] did it and then wanna laugh. They throw our stuff away, wanna laugh. Like it’s funny, you know? Cuz we’re nothing to them. It makes you feel like you’re nothing.”\n\nYeah. And you are something! You’re a beautiful human. You’re kind and sweet and caring, and smart.\n\n“I try, and it’s just like the more you try, the harder it becomes to even feel human. And you use the substances to take away the pain. They think that you get high to just—no, it takes away the pain. Like these doctors don’t even care about us.\n\n“This is sad. And it’s hard. At night it’s like, where do you lay down at? One of our cub members and board member, Faith was recently diagnosed with an aggressive form of breast cancer on March 2nd. Invasive Ductal Carcinoma / Estrogen Positive / Progesterone Positive / HER2+\n\nShe had surgery on March 24th and as she prepares to begin an intense treatment plan in the coming weeks, including 12 weeks of chemotherapy, 3 1/2 weeks of radiation, and a year of immunotherapy, we’re rallying around her with a 19 mile fundraising ride on April 18th to help support her.\n\nFaith is insured. However, out-of-pocket costs for breast cancer treatment in the USA are substantial. \n\nFaith has been a bright light and an important part of our EZ Bike Club family since she joined. Hello friends, I haven’t been active here on the instagram as I’ve felt my efforts were best used on the ground assisting my community as best I can. Instagram is a very paralyzing world for me and I try to just use it now only when it seems necessary. So I’m popping on here to promote this go fund me my close friends/comrades and I have started to hopefully lay out more infrastructure for sustainable community aid. Link in bio :-)\n\nAs our neighbors continue to protect each other from ICE and state violence, the other cracks and failures of our city leadership continue to grow and show their true colors. Many have not been able to work and pay rent, and many houseless or not are in desperate need of more prominent and consistent aid. \n\nThese funds will be used to directly grow our systems of aid here for our neighbors and comrades. We have been working in a multitude of ways to aid our most vulnerable neighbors including splitting and distributing firewood, patrolling for ICE and police, tuning up and distributing bikes, doing food and supply deliveries, and whatever small asks or rides come in between. While we’ve strived to find as many free resources as possible, many of our vehicles and supplies need maintenance as well as there’s a growing need for more communal vehicles and chainsaws as our network grows. Fort Snelling holds a grim past of the once Dakota internment camp of 1862 where thousands of Dakota and Lakota were torn from families and forced by the U.S. government to leave the land, many lives were stolen in the process.
