\n\n\nHey hi! I’m visiting from San Francisco and love exploring urban areas on foot. I was yearning for the Midwest, so I booked a weekend trip to Minneapolis. Yesterday, I spent my Saturday walking around your gorgeous city with the goal of visiting 10 lakes + Minnehaha Falls, a Tour de Lake, if you will.
\n\nI started around 5:15 AM from my hotel and ended the journey with dinner at Vinai. The walk was lovely. I’m in awe of the breathtaking green space, extensive bicycle/pedestrian network, and fantastic food. I made it to Powderhorn, Hiawatha, Nokomis, Diamond, Harriet, Bde Maka Ska, Lake of the Isles, Cedar, Brownie, and Wirth Lakes. The route was created entirely based on vibes, with the hope of doing a lap around each lake. Hard to pick a favorite, but...Lake Nokomis (please do not come after me).
\n\nNext up: walking to Modern Times for breakfast before heading to Art-A-Whirl! This city has me kicking my feet with pure joy. I’m here until tomorrow afternoon, so any coffee or food recs are welcome :)

First real thunderstorm living in Minneapolis and I honestly love the weather in Minnesota so much. Sure it gets really cold and snowy in the winter but I like that there are actual seasons here unlike the constant dry heat in Cali. It's also just so nice to enjoy the rain with a city skyline. I love it here.

The Hennepin County Attorney’s Office issued a nationwide arrest warrant on Monday for the ICE agent who allegedly shot a Venezuelan immigrant in north Minneapolis during Operation Metro Surge and then lied about the circumstances that led to the shooting.
\n\nChristian J. Castro, 52, was charged in Hennepin County District Court with four counts of second-degree assault with a deadly weapon and one count of falsely reporting a crime. The shooting of Julio Sosa-Celis on Jan. 14 came one week after ICE agent Jonathan Ross killed Renee Good and set off another wave of intense protests amid the largest immigration enforcement action in United States history.
\n\nSosa-Celis and his roommate, Alfredo Alejandro Aljorna, were initially charged with assaulting a federal officer as Trump administration officials widely publicized their mug shots and former Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem called their alleged crime an act of “attempted murder.” The charges were later dropped when video evidence directly contradicted the story given by federal officers.

\n\n\nWas doing some gardening approximately 7-7:15 this evening. Walked to the front yard. When I came back my house was covered in poop. I’m in SLP directly under today’s MSP flight approach (I know, this is [r/Minneapolis](r/Minneapolis)). If the window has been open it would have sprayed into my kitchen.
\n\nThis is absolutely disgusting. Who should I be contacting to complain?
\n\nEdit: lots of folks guessing birds since there is no blue color visible here. I know they’ve got massive poops this time of year, so maybe? But there is a fairly large area that got covered, the consistency seems all wrong, and it smells like human poop. Given the sheer quantity (not all is shown in the photos) it seems like way more than any bird could poop and still be living.
\n\nIt really, really doesn’t resemble any bird poop I’ve ever seen before. and I can confidently rule out neighbors unless they’ve got a cannon set up a block away.
\n\nTotally possible it wasn’t a malfunctioning airplane toilet. But when a wide spray of poop falls from an open sky, and it looks and smells like human poop, and there are planes flying directly overhead constantly (and also no birds had been seen)…it seemed like an insane conclusion was the only one that fit.

These are for you and for everyone else who took the time to send me your condolences and suggestions for healing. Thank you. You and your community helped me when I needed it most. I am eternally grateful.
\n\nOne note about the parade. I loved it. I loved that it was a celebration of life in a community devastated by inhumanity. The persistence of life in death - the rise of order from entropy. Mayday is the celebration of life. What began on the solstice with the promise of renewal is manifest on the equinox and in full bloom on Mayday.
\n\nMayday is also the time for the people, long dormant during the capitalist winter, to shatter permafrost’s isolation and reclaim the commons. Like plants after a forest fire, we rise not as individuals, but as an interconnected community. A forest is not made of one tree but of a diverse interconnected ecosystem. Each plant unique but totally dependent on each other for survival. Mono culture equals death. Diversity equals life, no system of extraction can clear cut the heart of the community.
\n\nOne final note. I really wanted to give a shout out to ArtStart and Lake Harriet Community School. As a parent myself, I know how hard it was for you all to pull that off. I could tell the parents were exhausted and the poor kids looked spent. The amount of time that that y’all must have spent to put that together, I can’t imagine. But I wanted to let you know that someone saw and appreciated your effort. Thank you.

\n\nThe Memorial Chapel is the centerpiece of the cemetery and a priceless architectural treasure—one of the most perfect examples of Byzantine mosaic art in the United States. When it was completed in 1910, it was the only building in America with an authentic mosaic interior. Through the years, visitors have been astonished to find such an outstanding architectural jewel in the heart of the Midwest. Many experts now believe that a work of such magnitude could not be recreated at any price today, as artisans possessing the necessary skills have passed into history.
\n\nDesigned by prominent Minneapolis architect Harry Wild Jones and modeled after the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul, Turkey, it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
\n\nMosaic Interior
\n\nThe chapel interior was created by New York designer Charles Lamb and many consider it the most perfect example of Byzantine mosaic art in the United States. In 1909, Lamb traveled to Rome to enlist the services of six highly accomplished mosaic artists who had just recently completed a project in the Vatican. The artists created more than 10 million mosaic pieces, called tesserae, from marble, colored stone, and glass fused with gold and silver. The artists then traveled to Minneapolis to assemble the work inside the chapel.
\n\nThe chapel dome is 40 feet high and ringed with stained-glass windows that serve as a sundial telling the time of day and season. Four large mosaic figures representing Love, Hope, Faith and Memory are situated on the side walls below the dome. The figures were based on paintings by Lamb’s wife, Ella Condie Lamb, a noted portrait artist of her time.
\n\nRenovation
\n\nIn 1996, Lakewood embarked on a year-long project of renovating the chapel. Under the guidance of architect Jim W. Miller, AIA, new lighting and heating systems were installed, a new crematory was built in the lower level, and the front entrance was landscaped.
\n\nPart of Miller’s task was undoing alterations made over the century, such as attempts to darken the interior with yellow paper over the stained-glass windows and a brown carpet over the marble floor. To remain true to the original architect’s and designer’s intentions, Miller studied letters exchanged among Jones, Lamb and the Lakewood Cemetery Building Committee.
\n\nThe 1996 renovation maintained the high standards set when the chapel was built nearly a century earlier. The best materials were used and highly skilled artists were chosen to do the work. Because of this consistent attention to excellence, the Lakewood Memorial Chapel will continue to be a beautiful sanctuary for the community through the 21st century and beyond.

\n\n\nSo today I met my grandpa over in St. Paul and took the 61 Bus over to Southeast and Northeast Minneapolis for Doors Open. We first went to the Como Community Center, but then eventually took the 61 bus again over to Kramarczuk’s Sausage. My Grandpa got the Polish Kielbasa and I got the Grinder Sandwich. Both were great, with me trying a small bite of the Kielbasa that my grandpa got. My grandpa also got one their beers. When we left, we realized we were lucky enough to there when we did, as when we left there was a long line of people. We also took the 11 bus over to the Mississippi watershed, and then took the 32 and 83 buses back after we went to Antiquified Antiques to get my mom something for Mother’s Day. Anyways the food at Kramarczuk’s was great as always and I definitely see my some coming back here in the near future

\n\n\nI was overwhelmed by your kindness and suggestions. I may not have gotten to you all and on some of the comments, I realized I just thanked for your suggestions and not for your condolences. And for that, I apologize.
\n\nA large number of you mentioned the Eloise Butler wildflower garden as a place where I might find peace and serenity. And I did, to a certain extent. I think I was too busy taking pictures of the flowers to actually stop and smell them. I must’ve taken hundreds, but seriously it really did bring me a lot of calm and peace.
\n\nI also visited the Walker, Minnehaha Falls, the Seward Cafe (great punk show), The 311 Club - Vacant rocks also Hi Alessandro & Dimitri - the only 2 Person I met all weekend. Also checked out the Fine Line on Saturday evening with it all culminating at the May Day Parade on Sunday.
\n\nIt’s been rough on y’all the last couple years with extreme sadness and grief at the loss of your loved ones and your communities. To keep your humanity through such horrors demonstrates, to me, your wonderful and kind nature. Thank you for your empathy, thank you for your support, and thank you for your humanity.

An ICE agent working in Minnesota during Operation Metro Surge will be charged with allegedly pointing his gun at two motorists while he was driving to the Whipple Building at the end of his shift in February.
\n\nGregory Donnell Morgan Jr., 35, of Temple Hills, Md., was charged with two felony counts of second-degree assault in Hennepin County District Court on Thursday. A nationwide warrant has been issued for his arrest.
\n\nThis is the first criminal charge to be levied against an ICE agent for their actions during Operation Metro Surge. Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty said in an interview with the Minnesota Star Tribune this week that while she can’t be certain, it might be the first charge of its kind nationwide.

The Walker Art Center announced today that it is severing ties with Cardamom because its choice to revert to a QR code ordering system and eliminate servers “does not align with the Walker’s vision for a dining experience.”
\n\nDel Prado said Cardamom will close at the Walker Art Center in the next 90 days.
\n\nThe separation comes at a time of controversy for the restaurant, which last week announced the format change, citing financial and staffing pressures. A statement from DDP Restaurant Group, one of the Twin Cities’ largest, said a majority of affected Cardamom employees were offered to stay with the new system and declined. Severance packages have been offered.

\n\n\nICYMI: The longtime homeowner and gardener passed last summer, and when the house was sold, many were unsure if the tulip house would ever return. (The bulbs were removed before the sale.)
\n\nNew homeowner Patty, who bought the house late last year, told me “it would be crushing” if the neighborhood didn’t have tulips. She found out where Lisa obtained her flowers and bought over 5,000 bulbs, planting them with the help of neighbors right before the ground froze.
\n\nThe south side of the house will bloom with multiple colors of tulips, while the east side has a mix of hardier flowers like hyacinths. Plus, surrounding neighbors planted tulips in their yards in memory of Lisa — by May, it will hopefully become a Tulip Street. 💕

I lived off of Lagoon and James over by the lakes in 2005 and did one of those day-in-the-life things that were popular on blogs back in the day. Went for a walk around the lake yesterday (4/5) and saw a blue heron, a cormorant, 2 pairs of northern shoveler ducks, 4 pairs of wood ducks, and a loon!!
\n\nI love loons so much and know it’s rare for them to be in the city. I’m going out again today with binoculars to hopefully get a better look if they’re still around.

As someone trying to purchase an apartment in Minneapolis, it is upsetting to find nearly every apartment on the market in North Loop (and other areas) have windowless bedrooms. I won't go into the (il)legality of this, and what living in such a setup does to one's mental health (google it if you're interested), but what I will say is that it's appalling this was ever allowed. Some zoning committee in the past was utterly clueless, developers took advantage, and now they should be made to fix it. I think I speak for most when I say we're sick and tired of companies squeezing out more revenue at the expense of the public's wellbeing. Developers can put more units in a building by elongating apartments such that the bedroom is between the living room and entryway - but that means bedrooms don't get windows. Or they get some stupid gap at the top of the wall shared with the living room. Disgusting.

I just moved up here from an urban southern city. Over the last week, I have seen at least 10 turkeys in various areas, including 7 of them a block from my house in Nokomis. They strut around like they own the place (do they?). A few people in my old city had chickens in their backyard so seeing them wasn’t unheard of but turkeys? What gives?

To the guy operating the snow plow on East Franklin and Bloomington around midnight last night, thank you. I was out doing a quick errand in socks and slippers (don’t ask) when I saw an elderly man in a motorized wheelchair completely stuck on the sidewalk snowbank
\n\nI didn't even notice him at first... I just saw him waving his hands and drove up only to see him stuck. The sidewalks were not plowed at all and he couldn't even get on to the plowed streets because of the snowbanks
\n\nI tried to help push him out myself and failed miserably. I was desperate and honestly didn’t know what I was going to do. It would be mad weird and embarrassing for me to leave him in the cold alone and drive way
\n\nThen I flagged you down and asked if you can help. You ain't even say a word just a thumbs up lmao. And just like that the path was clear for the elderly man. You were back to your parking lot job before I could even get a real thank you out, just gave you a quick wave that didn’t feel like nearly enough

These ICE contractors (bounty hunters) were in downtown Minneapolis yesterday around 2:30pm. There was a small group peacefully protesting/legally observing. One of them came back to the van and said he was going to grab his pepper ball gun and shoot every one of them. The driver opened his door and aimed his handgun directly at someone in front of the van, one agent fires pepper balls at the group, then they drove into someone as they were trying to flee. Hennepin county sheriff rolls up afterwards and doesn't offer to help.

\n\n\nTwo cars \"sharing\" a pair of Minnesota plates (LMS 890), with no front plates. Similar-looking vehicles, but one's a Nissan and the other is a Ford. This is from Friday 2/6; these two cars left the Whipple lot within 5 minutes of each other. I didn't notice that the tags were the same until reviewing my photos. A similar case was posted here from within the last couple of weeks, I think in a hotel parking lot.
\n\nYou'll also see cars at the Whipple federal building with NO plates at all. They drive right by the Hennepin County Sheriff vehicles with impunity. We asked those officers why they're not, you know, enforcing the law, and said they are \"not allowed to leave this post for any reason\". But of course they actually do leave their post to hassle citizens who walk in the road or drive too slowly.

ICE has been in my NE Mpls neighborhood randomly stopping people (of any color) and specifically a certain intersection where they pulled over and apprehended several people going about their business, even a white male.
\n\nThere is a gas station on that intersection and they had their eye on it as it is a very diverse neighborhood and there are several LEGAL immigrants working there. They took a customer from the gas pump.
\n\nThey took the Middle Eastern store manager. Without warning they went in and took him. In the dead of winter they did not let him take his coat, his keys, or his cell phone. They did not let him lock the doors behind him. Because he did not have his \"papers\" him-- which NOBODY was at the time. They towed his truck. They left a busy gas station wide open for anyone to walk in and steal anything they wanted. It was hours later when a regular customer called another manager wondering why the store was unattended.
\n\nFor 24 hours nobody-- not even his wife and 3 young children-- heard from him or knew where he was (of course they suspected) until he was finally allowed to call in order to provide his immigration papers, which his wife immediately brought in.
\n\nThen, Nothing. They had to \"verify\" them. So they shipped him to a Texas holding facility.
\n\nTHREE WEEKS LATER they dumped him out on the streets in Texas. He had to call collect home to get help flying back to Minneapolis. He had to pay his own way home and had to pay to get his truck back from the towing company.
\n\nMy guess is that he won't even be able to sue to get that money, AND 3 weeks of lost wages back.
\n\nThis is no \"highly targeted operation.\" They targeted someone by his nationality. With NO consideration for his or the business' safety. All for a quota.
\n\nMake no mistake, they may be leaving Minneapolis (though no one believes they are completely gone) but they will just hit another (probably \"Blue\" city) next. And because of all the scrutiny, will be more devious about it.
\n\nNo one is safe.
