\n\n\nAs you can see from the photo, the yellow portion of the Luce Line trail is closed. As in, the bridges are out, full stop you are not getting through. You can seem in orange my ad-hoc detour but it’s not very bike friendly (and may have involved someone’s backyard). You WILL NOT learn this information from the Hennepin Co or Three Rivers websites, both of which have info about closures but NOT this one. Doesn’t look at all temporary either.

msp.bike is a great resource for finding cycling groups, but I’m specifically in search of riding with young adults (ages 20-30). This is my first summer in MN, and I’m really excited to try out my new gravel bike and would love to meet and bike with people around my age. I’m by no means advanced, but I’ve been seriously mountain biking for a few years, just fairly new to gravel. I just want to ride, have fun, and find community!

My YouTube feed popped up this short video about Seattle's new Waterfront Greenway. One nice feature highlighted in the video was a cyclist signal that not only automatically detected a cyclist, it had an indicator to the cyclist informing them that they were detected.
\n\nDoes Minneapolis have any of these anywhere? I know of one cycling signal at the intersection of 18th Ave SE and Como Ave SE in the Como Neighborhood. But there is no indication to the cyclist the the signal has registered their presence. You just have to just hope and wait till the signal cycles. Even more annoying is that the signal only shows on the southbound side. The signal can be green and the northbound side doesn't know it.
\n\nSo has anyone seen any automatic cyclist signals that inform the cyclist that their presence is registered around town? It seems like a very small but useful improvement. Stopping to press a beg button is very annoying.

It's been so nice riding the now-open section of Kenilworth/Cedar Lake trail between Uptown and downtown! However, it seems that over the weekend an encampment has formed on the Cedar Lake trail going into downtown -- right by the intersection with Van White/Bassett Creek Valley Station. Saw 2 guys with at least one tent, some bikes, some wagons and maybe other things. Some of it was blocking part of the trail.
\n\nI understand they are in difficult circumstances to end up there but I do feel that the city should not allow this public space to be taken over by an encampment that makes the space less functional for what it is -- a bike trail where everyone should be able to feel safe. Any thoughts on how we can approach this as a community? Is there some way we could get the city to help out that would prevent a larger encampment from forming and help keep the area safe and pleasant for all?

\n\n\nThanks to dedicated advocacy from our Livable Lyndale campaign, Hennepin County has abandoned a misguided and chaotic design for the reconstruction of Lyndale Avenue South. The updated design makes promising progress toward improving the safety and comfort of people biking, walking, rolling, and taking public transit along this critical corridor. And, we need to continue to call on the county for critical adjustments to the plan before it’s finalized.
\n\n\n\nLaunched in 2023 and led by local Move Minnesota staff and volunteers, Livable Lyndale has mobilized powerful community support for a street design that puts people first. Together we’ve advocated for a Lyndale where it is easy to bus, bike, walk, and roll so that a once-in-a-generation reconstruction of this vibrant Minneapolis street will cultivate neighborhood connection, boost local businesses, and safeguard our climate future. Through consistent public rallies and the collection of over 2,400 petition signatures, 1,550 postcards, and 250 personal stories, our advocacy has had a big impact on the project.
\n\nThe updated design takes exciting steps toward the vision we’ve advocated for, including a two-way protected bike lane and dedicated bus lanes throughout parts of the corridor, wider sidewalks with patios for businesses, and green boulevards. These improvements will help create the space needed for people to safely travel along Lyndale and enjoy their time out and about connecting with neighbors or patronizing local shops and restaurants. Importantly, the design is a major upgrade from the previously proposed shared use path, which would have crowded people walking, rolling, and biking into one shared lane.
\n\nBut Hennepin County’s plan is missing key elements to protect the safety of people biking, walking, and rolling through one of the city’s most hazardous corridors—despite the county’s own goal of eliminating traffic deaths and serious injuries on county roads. The bike lane ends partway through the project at W 28th St, forcing people who bike to choose between navigating pedestrian traffic and crowding into a road designed for cars. And, the Lyndale and W Lake St intersection, which records the highest number of car crashes with pedestrians in the county, is still wide open to dangerous collisions.
\n\nRoute 4 bus riders deserve quick, convenient transit across Lyndale, but the design includes just two blocks of dedicated bus lanes and three blocks of a vague “future transit ready lane” that’s currently designated for parking. Adding a dedicated, all-day bus lane throughout the corridor is essential to improve the speed and reliability of service, prepare for the coming Lyndale Bus Rapid Transit Line, and work toward mobility justice for the people with low incomes, people of color, and people with disabilities who disproportionately rely on public transit in our metro region.
\n\nWe know our voices have made a difference in this project! Let’s hold Hennepin County accountable to their commitment to prioritizing walking, rolling, biking, and taking transit above car travel and make sure the final design reflects community demands so that Lyndale is a safer and more welcoming destination for all.

Year round biked just shy of thirties when I got laid off last fall. Pretty fast realized that I was missing more then half of jobs because MT can't give me a sub 2.5 hour commute (from DT), or due to my field needing rapid response for regions in a quarter of positions I was qualified for.
\n\nBought my first car, Got the job now I'm vying my time till I can get a job I can bike to again. My coworkers were wrong when they said if I got a car I'd see it.

Thanks for stopping to check on me when I was fixing the second tube puncture of my day! You were incredibly kind and I'm sorry if I came off a bit terse. This was on Chippendale Ave W in Farmington by the Kwik Trip.
\n\nAs I mentioned, it was my second flat and, while I had time to repair the first one, I didn't have the time or second tube to fix a second one as I was heading home to do pickup for my kids.

I’m a new(ish) biker. I used to be a longtime bike commuter, but after getting doored and breaking some bones, I got a little spooked. I’m finally back on a bike after several years off, and it feels amazing.
\n\nI mostly do chill rides, averaging 13–15 mph, and I’m training for the RAGBRAI. I’d love to get plugged into some group rides here in the Twin Cities, but I worry I’m not fast enough. I’m a woman, but I’m open to all types of rides. I’d love to find some folks to ride with in my pace group too. I bike with my partner but he’s speedy fast (and is kind enough to always go my pace) but want some friends to build that endurance and speed with.
\n\nI think I’m going to start joining Recovery’s Wednesday night rides, but I’d love to hear about other options. Most rides I see from local groups are 15+ mph, which feels a little intimidating.

\n\nLate last fall, the connection from Ole Olson Park & The Great Northern Greenway overlook opened. (pic 1)
\n\nNo idea when it opened but from 33rd Ave N (GAF) up to the Upper Harbor park (N Dowling/38th Ave N) is open. (pic 2)
\n\nThere is still active landscaping or construction work going on, but its all passable by bike or other pedestrian means.

\n\n\nMy brand new Trek Verve 2 was stolen out of my apartment parking garage one week after purchase. Someone must have slipped in while new residents had the garage propped open during their move. It has a black water bottle holder, kickstand, and front/rear lights. I've filed a police report and registered it on bikeindex. This is the first bike I bought as an adult, and I'm devastated to have lost it so soon. Please let me know if you see it!

I recently bought a Class 1 long tail cargo Ebike. I had hemmed and hawed about getting one for years, and I finally pulled the trigger. And it has been great! I wish that I had bought it years ago. I have two young kids and riding around Minneapolis with them is so simple, easy, and fun. Obviously, I knew certain things, like going up hills, would be much easier on an Ebike. But something that I was not expecting an Ebike to do better over an \"acoustic\" bike: defensive riding around town is more relaxed and therefore more enjoyable.
\n\nPrior to buying the Ebike (and the birth of my second child), I had been using an old Specialized Sirrus (a fitness/hybrid style bike) with a rack on the back and child seat to carry my first kid. In this configuration, riding around town could be frustrating and scary at times. It felt like I could never make the timing of the lights. I'd have to come to a stop at nearly every signal. Sometimes, I'd have the signal to cross, but a car would cut me off anyways. Again, I would have to stop and then get going. Drivers would get frustrated with my slow acceleration. All and all, it was a lot of work and anxiety.
\n\nBut with the Ebike, a lot of these issues don't matter. I can get up to speed faster, so I find myself making the signals more often. When approaching intersections, I find myself going slower than I did on the acoustic bike. There is no desire to try and carry my momentum like I had with the acoustic. The electric motor nearly instantly helps me regain it. So I'm able to approach intersections more slowly and cautiously, and then proceed through. If I have to unexpectedly stop, no big deal. I'll just downshift the internal gear hub and keep going. Easy.
\n\nNow, I'm not saying that an Ebike is plain better than an acoustic bike. Plenty of people will do just fine on an acoustic. But I am saying that they can be a better tool for a lot of people trying to get around Minneapolis. For all its high rankings as good bicycle city, Minneapolis still has a very patchy bicycle network. An Ebike can help most people smooth out the bumps of trying to get around.
\n\nIt really has made defensive riding much more relaxed, and I was not expecting that. So if you are like me, and thinking of buying an Ebike: I say do it. As expensive as they can be, they are still the fraction of the cost of a car. And even if you already have a car, buy an Ebike and just plan to hold on to the car longer than you would. You'll be surprised how much you use the bike and how often the car stays home.

\n\nWe’ve fought so hard to have protected bike lanes but every time the weather gets nice I see so many runners using them.
\n\nI am not complaining about shared use paths. I’m talking about full on raised concrete protected bike lanes like on 3rd street downtown Minneapolis. I don’t ride my bike on the sidewalk, so why do runners feel like the bike lane is best?
\n\nI cycle year round so maybe I just need to get used to everyone being outside again, but please don’t run in the bike lane. It makes zero sense when sidewalks exist right next to them 90% of the time.

There are already off-street bike paths on the west side of Franklin and the Wedge Co-op grocery store is right there, as are several other businesses around Franklin and 22nd. So close, yet so far away.

Did a big loop of both cities yesterday and noticed a distressing number of people with no helmet! Perhaps due to an influx of infrequent cyclists due to the weather, but that’s no excuse! I have literally turned around a half mile into a ride because I forgot one - I’d never ride without!

Hey everyone, I’m (30M) looking at moving to Minneapolis later this year (probably July/August timeframe) and I want to try something I’ve never done before, which is be car-free. I’m moving from South Carolina, so I’ve had a car my entire adult life but hate having to deal with them (and I love cars), between car payments, maintenance, insurance, etc. How is living in Minneapolis without a car, just using a bike? I’m looking at living off of Hennepin (either the 270 or 222 apartments). My job has an office in north Minneapolis about 6 miles away by bike, but I travel for work and would just get Ubers to the airport when needed. I feel I’m in a prime position to make this transition, and I guess just would like a little confidence boost by some locals to make sure I’m not crazy for jumping in headfirst like this.

Long time Twin Cities biker here.. Finally, after years of closure, the Kenilworth Trail the North Cedar Lake Regional Trail are open again! Yes, all the way east past the Twins Stadium and to the River. And for a while now the Cedar Lake Regional Trail thru St. Louis Park and Hopkins has also been open. What a relief and what great improvements! Now we can ride under Louisiana Ave, Wooddale Ave, and Belt line Blvd instead of playing human Frogger with traffic. Time to tip our helmets and raise our water bottles to all those who made and continue to make it happen.
\n\nNext time you ride take a closer look at our beautiful and amazing cycling trails. They're all pretty incredible, no matter which of the countless trails you take.

My apartment is less than 0.5 miles away from Lake Bde Ma Ska and is located along the Cedar Lake Regional Trail. The bike is light brown with black Surly lettering and has burnt orange platform pedals and a black topeak rear rack. \n\n\nIn case anyone was thinking of riding down to the bottom of Fort Snelling this weekend with the nice weather, I would not recommend it without a fat tire bike.
\n\nI took a detour through Fort Snelling on my way home from work today to do a couple laps around the roads in the park and ended up walking halfway up the trail on my way out because it's still covered in a several in thick sheet of ice.
\n\nThe big steep hill right by the fort looked clear, but I was too far gone into walking before I realized I should have just turned around and went up that way.
\n\nI knew there would be some ice, but thought it was going to be just a few sections where I would have to get off my bike and not the entire bottom half of the trail. Learned my less, though, not going to be trying to go back down there for at least another month. 😅

Last year I enjoyed some one-night (out-and-back) trips from St Paul. Luce Line to Hutchinson, Gateway State Trail to Stillwater then William O'Brien, etc.
\n\nI'm looking to build up to multi-night tours with camping this summer. Ideally two or three nights. Any routes that you'd recommend?
\n\nIt seems that we have a lot of \"radial\" options out of the metro, but I'm looking for a large loop rather than multiple out-and-backs. I'd like to keep to gravel trails / roads as much as possible, I'm not looking for truly offroad bikepacking.

\n\n\nJust following-up on my post from a few days ago. So tomorrow I'm hoping to roll out of the Central & Lowry area in NE around noon, and take Fillmore St. down through the Beltrami and Marcy-Holmes neighborhoods and meet up with anyone interested on the downtown end of the Stone Arch Bridge. Then I was going to meet up with a friend and anyone else who might be interested at Minnehaha Falls, before taking the parkway and MNDOT trail to the Fort Snelling area. The basic time frame would be:
\n\nThis is going to be a pretty-slow paced ride, as you can see from the time frame. Riding conditions should be good the hole way, with the possible exception of some remaining ice/slush covering a short section of the MNDOT trail. I plan on doing the ride today so I'll update this post more precise information if anything's difference since the last time I was down there.

I’ve heard some details on the Mendota railing that don’t sound good. Sounds like they are going to put a fence in front of the existing railing because someone at department of health wants a suicide fence and for some reason they can’t put it on top of the pillars. It’s going to take away a foot of walkway.

hello I have always wanted to get into cycling just never have other than as a kid or as an adult on a cheap box store mnt bike riding 15 miles to and from work 20 years ago. anyways I started running last year and need to and want to start cycling to help build up my endurance and my cardiovascular side of things plus on top of my running and who knows at my age of 46 may not be able to run for many years due to past knee surgery. \n\n\nBack in 2012, I had a Pacific Scorpio with Kenda Qwest rubbers on it. I stopped in into cub foods on the east side before going to work really early in the morning, and somebody stole my bike lol. I even had the little clip on generator for the lights and such on it.

\n\nWe are a group of cyclist from Indiana that have ridden a number of popular rail trails and road rides. Typical style; Katy, Gap C&O, Natchez, Round Ohio Tour that included Ohio to Erie, RAGBRAI, etc. We find that we enjoy riding between 70-95 miles per day.
\n\nWe want to come to Minnesota and check out some of your great trails and beautiful landscape, but need some advice.
\n\nWe are looking at a possible tour/loop this summer/early fall that starts in Brainerd->Duluth->Biwabik/Eveleth ->Grand Rapids->Bemidji->Brainerd. This would combine some great bike trails, along with USBR 45, and what appear to be decent country roads.
\n\nFor planning we normally leverage USBR (45 in this case), Strava Heatmaps, published routes, DNR Maps, etc. In the process I am seeing very limited bike traffic from Duluth north to Eveleth or Biwabik.
\n\nGuidance/Suggestions Needed
\n\nLogistics: Are there any major trail closures or "detours-from-hell" we should know about for September 2026?
\n\nWe’d love any "insider" routes that keep us on pavement/decent quality gravel but away from the heaviest truck traffic. Thanks in advance for the help!

\n\nIt was very sad biking past the two memorials, but very uplifting to see the turnout, the supporters on sidewalks and houses, and solidarity of our community.
