This is my first summer in MN, and I’m really excited to try out my new gravel bike and would love to meet and bike with people around my age. One nice feature highlighted in the video was a cyclist signal that not only automatically detected a cyclist, it had an indicator to the cyclist informing them that they were detected.
\n\n
Does Minneapolis have any of these anywhere? I know of one cycling signal at the intersection of 18th Ave SE and Como Ave SE in the Como Neighborhood. But there is no indication to the cyclist the the signal has registered their presence. You just have to just hope and wait till the signal cycles. Even more annoying is that the signal only shows on the southbound side. The signal can be green and the northbound side doesn't know it.
\n\n
So has anyone seen any automatic cyclist signals that inform the cyclist that their presence is registered around town? It seems like a very small but useful improvement. However, it seems that over the weekend an encampment has formed on the Cedar Lake trail going into downtown -- right by the intersection with Van White/Bassett Creek Valley Station. Saw 2 guys with at least one tent, some bikes, some wagons and maybe other things. Some of it was blocking part of the trail.
\n\n
I understand they are in difficult circumstances to end up there but I do feel that the city should not allow this public space to be taken over by an encampment that makes the space less functional for what it is -- a bike trail where everyone should be able to feel safe. Any thoughts on how we can approach this as a community? Is there some way we could get the city to help out that would prevent a larger encampment from forming and help keep the area safe and pleasant for all?
\n
\n\n
⬆️ 33 points | 💬 9 comments

\n
\n
\n\n
\n \n
2026 City of Minneapolis Vision Zero Crash Study is out! The updated design makes promising progress toward improving the safety and comfort of people biking, walking, rolling, and taking public transit along this critical corridor. And, we need to continue to call on the county for critical adjustments to the plan before it’s finalized.
\n\n
Tell Hennepin County the final design must make Lyndale Avenue South safer, more comfortable, and accessible for all. Submit a public comment by April 24!
\n\n
Launched in 2023 and led by local Move Minnesota staff and volunteers, Livable Lyndale has mobilized powerful community support for a street design that puts people first. Together we’ve advocated for a Lyndale where it is easy to bus, bike, walk, and roll so that a once-in-a-generation reconstruction of this vibrant Minneapolis street will cultivate neighborhood connection, boost local businesses, and safeguard our climate future. Through consistent public rallies and the collection of over 2,400 petition signatures, 1,550 postcards, and 250 personal stories, our advocacy has had a big impact on the project.
\n\n
The updated design takes exciting steps toward the vision we’ve advocated for, including a two-way protected bike lane and dedicated bus lanes throughout parts of the corridor, wider sidewalks with patios for businesses, and green boulevards. These improvements will help create the space needed for people to safely travel along Lyndale and enjoy their time out and about connecting with neighbors or patronizing local shops and restaurants. Importantly, the design is a major upgrade from the previously proposed shared use path, which would have crowded people walking, rolling, and biking into one shared lane.
\n\n
But Hennepin County’s plan is missing key elements to protect the safety of people biking, walking, and rolling through one of the city’s most hazardous corridors—despite the county’s own goal of eliminating traffic deaths and serious injuries on county roads. The bike lane ends partway through the project at W 28th St, forcing people who bike to choose between navigating pedestrian traffic and crowding into a road designed for cars. And, the Lyndale and W Lake St intersection, which records the highest number of car crashes with pedestrians in the county, is still wide open to dangerous collisions.
\n\n
Route 4 bus riders deserve quick, convenient transit across Lyndale, but the design includes just two blocks of dedicated bus lanes and three blocks of a vague “future transit ready lane” that’s currently designated for parking. Adding a dedicated, all-day bus lane throughout the corridor is essential to improve the speed and reliability of service, prepare for the coming Lyndale Bus Rapid Transit Line, and work toward mobility justice for the people with low incomes, people of color, and people with disabilities who disproportionately rely on public transit in our metro region.
\n\n
We know our voices have made a difference in this project! Let’s hold Hennepin County accountable to their commitment to prioritizing walking, rolling, biking, and taking transit above car travel and make sure the final design reflects community demands so that Lyndale is a safer and more welcoming destination for all.
\n\n
Please share comments with Hennepin County by April 24, telling them the final design must:
\n\n
\n
extend the two-way, protected bike lane from W Franklin Ave to W 31st St
\n
include a dedicated, all-day bus lane from W Franklin Ave to W 31st St
\n
plan for bus lanes from day 1 instead of “future transit ready lanes”
\n
ensure Lyndale is safe, enjoyable, and accessible for people walking and rolling by separating all sidewalks from bike and bus lanes and designing for pedestrian safety at all intersections, especially at the Lyndale and W Lake St intersection
\n
\n\n
Speak up now to demand critical improvements before the plan gets sent to City of Minneapolis and Hennepin County leaders for approval later this summer. Make your voice heard by April 24!
\n
\n\n
⬆️ 44 points | 💬 8 comments

\n
\n
\n\n
\n \n
Driving down the Theodor Wirth PKWY enjoying the weather and enjoy the ride everyone
\n \n 2026-04-16 18:35\n
\n\n\n

Year round biked just shy of thirties when I got laid off last fall. I used to be a longtime bike commuter, but after getting doored and breaking some bones, I got a little spooked. I’m finally back on a bike after several years off, and it feels amazing.
\n\n
I mostly do chill rides, averaging 13–15 mph, and I’m training for the RAGBRAI. I’d love to get plugged into some group rides here in the Twin Cities, but I worry I’m not fast enough. I’m a woman, but I’m open to all types of rides. I’d love to find some folks to ride with in my pace group too. I bike with my partner but he’s speedy fast (and is kind enough to always go my pace) but want some friends to build that endurance and speed with.
\n\n
I think I’m going to start joining Recovery’s Wednesday night rides, but I’d love to hear about other options. I had hemmed and hawed about getting one for years, and I finally pulled the trigger. And it has been great! I wish that I had bought it years ago. I have two young kids and riding around Minneapolis with them is so simple, easy, and fun. Obviously, I knew certain things, like going up hills, would be much easier on an Ebike. But something that I was not expecting an Ebike to do better over an \"acoustic\" bike: defensive riding around town is more relaxed and therefore more enjoyable.
\n\n
Prior to buying the Ebike (and the birth of my second child), I had been using an old Specialized Sirrus (a fitness/hybrid style bike) with a rack on the back and child seat to carry my first kid. In this configuration, riding around town could be frustrating and scary at times. It felt like I could never make the timing of the lights. I'd have to come to a stop at nearly every signal. Sometimes, I'd have the signal to cross, but a car would cut me off anyways. Again, I would have to stop and then get going. Drivers would get frustrated with my slow acceleration. All and all, it was a lot of work and anxiety.
\n\n
But with the Ebike, a lot of these issues don't matter. I can get up to speed faster, so I find myself making the signals more often. When approaching intersections, I find myself going slower than I did on the acoustic bike. There is no desire to try and carry my momentum like I had with the acoustic. The electric motor nearly instantly helps me regain it. So I'm able to approach intersections more slowly and cautiously, and then proceed through. If I have to unexpectedly stop, no big deal. I'll just downshift the internal gear hub and keep going. Easy.
\n\n
Now, I'm not saying that an Ebike is plain better than an acoustic bike. Plenty of people will do just fine on an acoustic. But I am saying that they can be a better tool for a lot of people trying to get around Minneapolis. For all its high rankings as good bicycle city, Minneapolis still has a very patchy bicycle network. An Ebike can help most people smooth out the bumps of trying to get around.
\n\n
It really has made defensive riding much more relaxed, and I was not expecting that. So if you are like me, and thinking of buying an Ebike: I say do it. As expensive as they can be, they are still the fraction of the cost of a car. And even if you already have a car, buy an Ebike and just plan to hold on to the car longer than you would. You'll be surprised how much you use the bike and how often the car stays home.
\n
\n\n
⬆️ 27 points | 💬 9 comments

\n
\n
\n\n
\n \n
Runners in Protected Bike Lanes
\n \n 2026-03-29 19:39\n
\n\n\n

Why?
\n\n
We’ve fought so hard to have protected bike lanes but every time the weather gets nice I see so many runners using them.
\n\n
I am not complaining about shared use paths. I’m talking about full on raised concrete protected bike lanes like on 3rd street downtown Minneapolis. I don’t ride my bike on the sidewalk, so why do runners feel like the bike lane is best?
\n\n
I cycle year round so maybe I just need to get used to everyone being outside again, but please don’t run in the bike lane. It makes zero sense when sidewalks exist right next to them 90% of the time.
\n
\n\n
⬆️ 29 points | 💬 21 comments

\n
\n
\n\n
\n \n
These segment names are getting a bit weird
\n \n 2026-03-24 08:02\n
\n\n
https://www.reddit.com/gallery/1s2bswr
\n\n\n\n\n
⬆️ 18 points | 💬 5 comments

\n
\n
\n\n
\n \n
Provide your input on the new Lyndale Ave design!
\n \n 2026-03-26 14:01\n
\n\n
https://www.arcgis.com/apps/instant/reporter/index.html?appid=ad2bdc684e834c839078c4ca295dc8fd
\n\n\n

https://beheardhennepin.org/lyndale-avenue/news_feed/the-updated-design-for-lyndale-avenue
\n\n
https://www.reddit.com/r/CyclingMSP/comments/1s3kdwt/new_lyndale_ave_design_includes_a_dedicated_2way/
\n\n
EDIT: Some leading questions for you to consider:
\n\n
\n

How does this design benefit pedestrians, bicyclists, and micro-mobility users during the winter? What are some improvements to the design that could solve exponentially for users outside of cars in the winter?

\n

Would this design empower you to bring someone along for a ride who doesn't bike much or at all?

\n

What establishments matter to you on this stretch and how does this design impact your ability to patronize those businesses?

\n
\n\n
Also remember how we got to this point - we all advocated really hard as individuals and as a collective. MoveMN had a campaign that asked city council to withhold municipal consent on the previous design. Everyone who signed that petition and wrote in the postcards helped contributed to this point. Email your councilperson with your thoughts on this updated design if there is something specific you'd like to stand on.
\n
\n\n
⬆️ 20 points | 💬 2 comments

\n
\n
\n\n
\n \n
We Are All Minnesota | Limited Edition Cycling Kit - Bicycle Alliance of Minnesota
\n \n 2026-03-25 19:42\n
\n\n
https://www.bikemn.org/weareallmn/
\n\n\n

BikeMN worked with Rodrigo Bautista, a Mexican immigrant and Minneapolis resident, to create a limited edition cycling kit. 100% of the proceeds will benefit the International Institute of Minnesota.
\n\n
Pre-orders close on April 6th!
\n
\n\n
⬆️ 9 points | 💬 0 comments

\n
\n
\n\n"},{"id":"digest:digest-cyclingmsp:96","title":"Digest: r/cyclingmsp: Mar 16 - Mar 23, 2026","link":"https://rssglue.subdavis.com/feed/digest-cyclingmsp/rss","author":"System","published_at":"2026-03-23T11:30:00+00:00","content":"\n\n\n
\n \n
Most glaring bike path gaps in the metro?
\n \n 2026-03-20 14:36\n
\n\n
https://i.redd.it/vyita3jct8qg1.jpeg
\n\n\n

For Minneapolis, still gotta be this abrupt drop from bike path to narrow sidewalk across a highway entrance ramp on Lyndale. I’m moving from South Carolina, so I’ve had a car my entire adult life but hate having to deal with them (and I love cars), between car payments, maintenance, insurance, etc. How is living in Minneapolis without a car, just using a bike? I’m looking at living off of Hennepin (either the 270 or 222 apartments). My job has an office in north Minneapolis about 6 miles away by bike, but I travel for work and would just get Ubers to the airport when needed. I feel I’m in a prime position to make this transition, and I guess just would like a little confidence boost by some locals to make sure I’m not crazy for jumping in headfirst like this.
\n
\n\n
⬆️ 18 points | 💬 23 comments

\n
\n
\n\n
\n \n
Trail Maps?
\n \n 2026-03-19 13:09\n
\n\n
https://i.redd.it/rmtswijwa1qg1.jpeg
\n\n\n

Does anyone know a good resource for maps of the bike trails and routes in and around the metro area?
\n
\n\n
⬆️ 18 points | 💬 13 comments

\n
\n
\n\n
\n \n
Make a map of low-stress bike-friendly routes for MPLS and suburbs
\n \n 2026-03-19 14:31\n
\n\n
https://www.reddit.com/gallery/1ry8itc
\n\n\n

If you like maps and like helping people find low-stress routes to bike on, consider signing up here https://www.bikestreets.com/make-a-map
\n\n
Bike Streets is free and provides turn-by-turn navigation from crowd-sourced maps. Then I was going to meet up with a friend and anyone else who might be interested at Minnehaha Falls, before taking the parkway and MNDOT trail to the Fort Snelling area. The basic time frame would be:
\n\n
\n
12:00 leave Central & Lowry. If anyone wants to meet up here I can just wait outside Recovery Bike Shop for a few minutes.
\n
12:25 leave downtown end of Stone Arch Bridge, in the parking lot there and make our way down Portland past the Renee Good memorial and down to E 42nd St
\n
1:30 leave Minnahaha Falls overlook and make our way down to Whipple
\n
\n\n
This is going to be a pretty-slow paced ride, as you can see from the time frame. Riding conditions should be good the hole way, with the possible exception of some remaining ice/slush covering a short section of the MNDOT trail. I plan on doing the ride today so I'll update this post more precise information if anything's difference since the last time I was down there.
\n
\n\n
⬆️ 21 points | 💬 1 comments

\n
\n
\n\n
\n \n
Interest in a Sunday (2-15) group ride down to the Whipple Bldg?
\n \n 2026-02-09 13:02\n
\n\n\n

Just putting out feelers for anyone who'd like to join. Typical style; Katy, Gap C&O, Natchez, Round Ohio Tour that included Ohio to Erie, RAGBRAI, etc. We find that we enjoy riding between 70-95 miles per day.
\n\n
We want to come to Minnesota and check out some of your great trails and beautiful landscape, but need some advice.
\n\n
We are looking at a possible tour/loop this summer/early fall that starts in Brainerd->Duluth->Biwabik/Eveleth ->Grand Rapids->Bemidji->Brainerd. This would combine some great bike trails, along with USBR 45, and what appear to be decent country roads.
\n\n
For planning we normally leverage USBR (45 in this case), Strava Heatmaps, published routes, DNR Maps, etc. In the process I am seeing very limited bike traffic from Duluth north to Eveleth or Biwabik.
\n\n
Guidance/Suggestions Needed
\n\n
\n
Brainerd to Duluth: Any recommendations? Looks like a fair amount of time on State Highway 18...
\n
The Duluth-to-Mesabi Gap: Is there a preferred "road-riding" route from Duluth to Eveleth/Biwabik? We see Hwy 4 or Hwy 53, but are there quieter paved county roads you’d recommend for a group comfortable with road traffic? Or is this stretch generally avoided for a reason? I see TRAM 2015 and 2022 took some routes out this direction up Highway 5 and Highway 7...
\n
Grand Rapids to Bemidji: For those who have ridden USBR 45 here, how is the shoulder/traffic on the "Explorer's Route" (County Rd 2) vs. staying closer to Hwy 2?
\n
\n\n
Logistics: Are there any major trail closures or "detours-from-hell" we should know about for September 2026?
\n\n
We’d love any "insider" routes that keep us on pavement/decent quality gravel but away from the heaviest truck traffic. Wanted to share there's a cycling shop in the New Prague MN area called Ron's Cycle Shop who's been spewing propaganda that the murder of Alex Pretti was "justified execution" (yes, that's a direct quote). Please spend your dollars wisely, and support communities and businesses that recognize the injustice - not support it. See ya'll at the upcoming Bike Swap and any of the number of rides that've been created to support Alex. Thank you!
\n\n
UPDATE: Dang Reddit - 108k views and almost 900 upvotes in 5 days!! Sincerest appreciation for posting, sharing, and speaking out against the injustice. Heartfelt thanks for those who made it to the ride last Saturday from Washburn Fair Oaks Park to stop at Alex' memorial, his workplace at the VA hospital and Renee Good's memorial....you showed up in numbers there, just like you did here!
\n\n
DOUBLE UPDATE: Here's a link in case you missed the event - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BThTbo5icdA - Credit to Walking Minnesota for providing it!!!
\n
\n\n
⬆️ 943 points | 💬 66 comments

\n
\n
\n\n
\n \n
Seriously gonna be wild.
